Creating equitable living environments. Hong Kong, China. 11/09/2023-12/09/2023.
Prof. Fulong Wu was invited by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to give a talk as a panelist on ‘creating equitable living environments’ at ‘Philanthropy for Better Cities Forum’ from 11/09/2023-12/09/2023 in Hong Kong, China.
Prof. Wu shared his insights on the housing market in mainland China. Mainland China, as a relatively recent paticipant in the private housing market, has drawn lessons from Hong Kong and Singapore during the development of its property sector. It has recognised the influential role of government in regulating land development and protecting agricultural land, as well as the effectiveness of a land leasing system that allows developers to acquire government-owned land on a competitive basis. For philanthropy, mainland China leverages philanthropy to support the government’s strategic decision-making (e.g, training city planners).
The moderator was Mr Gaurav Gupta, Global Managing Partner of Dalberg Advisors. The other panelists included Ms Winnie Ho, Secretary for Housing of The Hong Kong Special Administraive Region Government; Prof Phang Sock Yong, Celia Moh Chair Professor of Economics of Singapore Management University. They shared their insights on housing in Hong Kong and Singapore, respsectively. Philanthropy play different roles in different contexts. In Singapore, philanthropy has a role to play in bridging gaps where housing markets have failed and bringing the community into the government’s decision-making. While Ms Ho explained in Hong Kong, where public housing is often built with integrated community services, philanthropy has a role in supporting community services offered in those community centres.
