The China-UK Joint Seminar on Modern Smart City, Urban and Rural Planning, Sustainable Development, Chongqing, China. 23/10/2023-24/10/2023.
Dr Weikai Wang attended the ‘The China-UK Joint Seminar on Modern Smart City, Urban and Rural Planning, Sustainable Development’, organised by Chongqing Jiaotong University and Beijing Forestry University. The conference theme is ‘Mountains, Wisdom, Humanities: Modern Planning Theory and Practice’. Dr. Wang gave keynote speech about metropolitan planning in China.

Dr. Weikai Wang presented his recent work entitled ‘Metropolitanization through new metropolitan plans in China’. This paper examines the emergent ‘metropolitan plans’ (dushiquan guihua) since 2019 and identifies a paradigm shift in metropolitanization from ‘territorial urbanization’ to ‘multi-city regionalism’ in China. It illustrates new changes in definition, planning practices, and governance in two forms of metropolitanisation. The findings not only provide conceptual clarity and relational understandings of the metropolitanization process but also exemplify the distinctiveness of the Chinese metropolitanization approach in terms of scalar logic, planning style, and associated governance mechanisms.
