Creating Chinese Urbanism: understanding urban governance from the transformation of urban spaces. Chengdu, China. 17/11/2024.
Prof. Fulong Wu was invited by Sichuan University to give a talk on Chinese urbanism in Chengdu, China on 17/11/2024.
Prof. Wu was invited by the Architecture Department to give a talk to PhD students. There were also early-career and more senior academic staff and reserachers.
Prof. Wu reviewed the transformation of urban landscape in China in the last century. Different historical and political economic contexts shape the different but connected characteristics of various stages. The planned economic system after 1949 and the economic reform since 1978 decide the most significant features of urban landscape. He demonstrated different and changing types of residential landscapes in the form of various kinds of neighbourhoods, including alleys, work-unit neighbourhoods, urban villages, and gated communities. Using these examples, he reflected on the changing governance mode of urban development and spaces in China.
The talk led to active discussions among the students and researchers.
